Two Phuket Old Town Museums Worth Your Afternoon
Museum Phuket (Phuketnagara • Peranakannitat)
Housed in the beautiful old Chartered Bank building right by the yellow clock tower, this is one of the Old Town’s most photogenic buildings — inside and out. It’s split across two facing buildings, each with its own exhibition.
Phuketnagara traces the city’s journey from tin-mining settlement to the Phuket you see today. Peranakannitat goes deeper into Peranakan culture — the clothing, the food, the beliefs, and the everyday life of Chinese descendants who blended their traditions with Thai ones to create something uniquely Phuket.
Both use interactive displays that make the history easy to follow. It’s compact, easy to enjoy in under an hour, and entry is free. Open Tuesday through Sunday, 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM (including public holidays) — just remember it takes Mondays off.
Phuket Thai Hua Museum
Once a Chinese language school, this stately Sino-Portuguese building now tells the story of the Hokkien Chinese families who shaped Phuket. Sixteen exhibition rooms take you through the tin boom, the migration, and the Peranakan culture you can still taste and see around town today. Give yourself about an hour — and don’t rush the courtyard, it’s one of the prettiest in the Old Town.
